EXTERIOR HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS
CLEAN OUT GUTTERS
Regularly remove debris from gutters. Keeping gutters clear helps them perform well. Debris can cause gutters to overflow, leaking behind, which can cause fascia, siding, and windows to rot. Leaf guards can also require some maintenance, such as brushing off the tops of the guards.
CLEAN FURNITURE & GRILLS
Get your grill in working order before it’s time to start using it! Start by brushing and cleaning the grates, washing the cover, and wiping down the exterior. You should also check the level on your propane tanks, get them refilled, or stock up on coals so you can throw your chef hat on, and go.
PRUNE SHRUBS & WEED GARDENS
As temperatures rise, plants start blooming rapidly. Starting early weeding gardens and pruning shrubs can help keep things under control. Clearing debris from driveways, patios, and decking can be a subtle way to improve your space.
SCHEDULE A ROOF INSPECTION
Schedule a roof inspection. Catch issues before it’s too late! Over time, as shingles get weathered on, issues can arise. Heavy granule loss, missing shingles, significant moss growth, or water leaks can be a telltale sign that you might need roof repairs. Ask us for a recommendation on what contractors we recommend!
TOUCH UP PAINT & STAIN
Before spring showers really set in is a good time to start touching up any paint or stain on siding or decking. Chips in paint can allow for moisture to get into the bare wood causing rot and more chipping. Touching up the paint when needed can help prevent this and help keep your siding and decking intact.
REPLACE OUTDOOR BULBS & CLEAR DRYER VENTS
Check outside lightbulbs to make sure they are in working order. Replace dim or broken bulbs. Clear out dryer vents to remove excess debris. Dryer lint can build up and become a fire hazard if not removed regularly. Be sure to clear it from your dryer as well as the exterior vent.
TURN ON SPIGOTS
Turn on spigots and bring your hoses back outside from seasonal retirement. Make sure to unravel the hose completely to check for any tears or kinks before you need to use it. And, make sure the nozzle is in working order. From watering gardens to cleaning your home’s exterior, you’re going to need it!
CLEAN WINDOWS & SIDING
Spring can bring an influx of pollen into the air. This can cloud up the exterior of your windows or collect on your siding. Shady areas surrounding your home can also encourage the growth of algae. The longer the algae sticks on, the harder the stains are to remove.
